Hats aren’t just for bad hair days or as a way to avoid sunburn. They’re a whole vibe!
But, just like any clothing item, hats need a little love every now and then. They collect sweat and dust regularly (and who knows what else), which means they need regular care to stay looking fresh and keep their shape intact over the course of time.
So, what’s the secret to keeping your hats in prime condition? Well, it all starts with understanding what your hat’s made of and how best to clean it without ruining its charm.
Before you dive into scrubbing and washing your hats, you should take a moment to get to know exactly what’s on your head.
The crown is the top portion of the hat that sits on your head. It can be structured (keeps its shape) or unstructured (meaning it molds to your head).
This is the flat or curved extension from the crown that provides shade for your face. These four terms are often used interchangeably.
This is the underside of the brim.
The band/fabric which runs along the inside circumference of the hat, which helps absorb sweat and keep you cool.
These are the triangular sections of fabric that are sewn together to form the crown. Most hat designs use 5, 6, or 7 panels.
Now we come to the big question: should you wash your hat or let it be? Well, the answer isn’t as simple as it sounds. Some hats crave a good wash, while others would prefer to skip the bath altogether. Let’s explore in greater detail.
If your hat has seen better days and if it’s covered in dirt and sweat stains, it’s probably time for a wash. If it’s a cotton or synthetic hat, you can usually throw it in the washer (just check the care label first).
Wool, felt, and leather hats, however, should steer clear of the washing machine. That’s because those materials prefer gentler methods, like hand washing or spot cleaning (more on this below).
If your hat is just a little dusty or you’re dealing with minor stains, there’s no need to pull out the soap and water. A quick brush or a damp cloth will do the trick. Straw hats are a no-go for soaking. Also, if you’re dealing with a high-end vintage or leather hat, it’s probably best to leave the washing to the pros or follow specialized cleaning tips.
For those in-between moments when your hat isn’t in desperate need of a full wash, spot cleaning is the way to go. Just get a hold of a damp cloth and then gently dab at the stained area.
Cleaning your hats is one thing, but maintaining their shape and integrity over the long term is a whole different ball game.
First things first: where you store your hat matters. Store your hats in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Alternatively, you can utilize a hat box or a shelf with plenty of space, and if you’re really serious about keeping them in perfect condition, grab a hat form to help maintain that ideal shape.
If you’re really looking to take your hat care to the next level, you could consider investing in a waterproof spray or fabric protector. This will help keep your hats safe from rain, beverage spills, and dirt without compromising the material. And if you’re storing your hats for an extended period of time, throw in a silica gel packet in there for good measure to keep moisture at bay.
Cleaning and caring for your hats doesn’t have to be a hassle. By using the tips we’ve covered, you can keep them looking fresh and stylish for years to come, so you’re ready to top off your look with confidence.
